The rotary encoder has a built-in bearing and stator, and the encoder's circular grating is directly connected to the measured shaft. The scanning unit is mounted on the shaft through ball bearings and supported by the stator coupling. When the shaft undergoes angular acceleration, the stator coupling must only absorb the moment caused by the friction of the bearing, so it can minimize static and dynamic measurement errors. Moreover, the coupling mounted on the stator can also compensate the axial movement of the shaft under test.

Other advantages of the stator coupling include: simple installation; short overall length; high natural frequency of the coupling; hollow shafts are allowed.

Rotary encoders with built-in bearings are connected by separate couplings and can be used for solid shafts. The recommended coupling for connecting the shaft under test can compensate for radial and axial errors. Angle encoders with separate couplings can support higher shaft speeds. Rotary encoders without built-in bearings work without friction. Scanning head and circular grating, grating drum or steel belt can be adjusted separately during assembly.
