3 basic operation modes of photoelectric sensor

Three types of photoelectric sensors are mainly used in the industry, namely, through-beam sensors, reflective sensors and diffuse sensors. The basic function of various sensors is to detect the presence or absence of objects, or to measure the distance between them. In manufacturing, they provide real-time information that can be fed back to the central processing unit (CPU) to help keep the process running smoothly. Photoelectric sensors can be widely used in the automation industry together with other proximity sensors (such as inductive sensors, capacitive sensors, and ultrasonic sensors). Its non-contact object detection function makes it an ideal choice for today's process-leading industries. It is suitable for sensors in a variety of housings, such as cylinders, blocks, and cubes, and has a variety of sizes. Engineers can match individual parts of the process with the most suitable sensor.

Through beam sensor

Through-beam sensors are considered the most reliable form of light sensing. The principle is based on two separate housings, one for the transmitter and the other for the receiver. The transmitter provides a continuous beam to the receiver. Whenever an object passes through the light beam, it will interrupt the path between the transmitter and the receiver, thereby prompting the receiver to send an electrical signal to the output. Regardless of color or angular movement, the through beam sensor can detect almost any object and is suitable for long-distance sensing.

Precautions: For through-beam sensors, optical alignment of the transmitter and receiver is essential before starting operation. The transmitter and receiver require two opposite mounting points. For longer distances, careful calibration must be performed. Reflection sensor

Compared with through-beam sensors, reflective sensors are simpler and less time-consuming to install, so reflective sensors are more widely used in the industry. The transmitter and receiver are installed in the same housing, and the reflector is required to be placed opposite the sensor. The principle is similar to that of an opposite beam. When the beam between the transmitter and the receiver is interrupted, the detection starts.

When there is an object, the reflector reflects the beam back to the sensor, which interrupts the beam and causes the sensor to send an electrical signal to the output.

Precautions:

Highly reflective objects (such as aluminum cans) require the sensor to be equipped with a polarizing filter. Many sensors are usually equipped with polarizing filters, but it is best to check. For these sensors, the light reflected by the aluminum can is different from the light reflected by the reflector. Since the filter in the receiver does not recognize the light emitted by the aluminum can, the sensor can detect the presence or absence of the aluminum can. When using a polarizing filter, make sure that the reflector is also a polarizing type. There are also reflective sensors dedicated to detecting transparent objects.

Diffuse sensor:

The diffuse sensor only needs to install one device, so it is very easy to install. This is because the transmitter and receiver are in the same housing. Unlike reflective sensors, diffuse sensors do not require reflectors to operate. Within the predetermined sensing range, the diffuse sensor uses the reflection of the target object.

The diffuser emits a continuous beam of light that hits the target, the beam will diffuse in all directions, and part of the beam will be reflected back and recognized by the receiver, and then the receiver will send an electrical signal to the output.

Precautions:

The background suppression sensor uses an adjustable sensing range, which is particularly beneficial to the industry because people can ignore reflective background objects to ensure that only objects within the sensing range are detected.

Industry relies heavily on sensors to monitor all aspects of industrial processes. For example, many top brands such as Japan’s Omron, France’s Schneider, Germany’s Pepperl+Fuchs, Germany’s SICK, Swiss Baumer, Turck, and the United States Bonner are currently continuing to develop sensors to meet the growing industrial needs.

Smaller enclosures, faster response frequencies and improved functions continue to improve application capabilities, thereby achieving more effective automation processes.

Sensors are at the forefront of automation and will continue to be regarded by control engineers as an important part of the industrial process.
